I have a silly little 950g extinguisher hidden away in a base locker in the van.
Was looking to relocate it in a better location for quick access then thought about getting something just as compact but would last a bit longer, god forbid we have a fire in the van.

I came across these, nice and compact and all the blurb looks impressive but very expensive at about £80 for the 50 second version.

Anyone know about these? Are they as good as they claim?

Also looking for a compact fire blanket as well, does such a thing exist?

I’ve seen several YouTube videos and they seem very impressive and don’t leave any lingering chemicals or powder.

I’ll eagerly await other replies.

There's quite a bit of discussion on some of the yachty forums about them, Pete:
eg:
https://forums.ybw.com/index.php?threads/anyone-used-fire-safety-stick-as-an-alternative-to-a-fire-extinguisher.533536/

The motorsport fraternity seem very keen on them as well, probably because they're so light and compact, I guess.

They are a bit on the pricey side as you say but I guess that may change if they prove to be as good as claimed - and everyone starts making copies.

Personally I can't see how they claim it's not toxic and can be safely breathed in.  It looks like it's a very fine particulate cloud of Potassium Nitrate - salt-petre to you and me.  (use it to cure your bacon, or make gunpowder ....[biggrin])

As for a fire blanket:  We carry a standard kitchen variety, wall mounted by the hob:
Fire Blanket.jpg
It's about 290mm high, 160mm wide and 40mm thick.  Just yank the tapes downward if (please, never) the need arises.

Judging by the script on it we bought it in Germany a very, very long time ago but I believe they're made from a type of fibreglass and don't 'go off'.  [biggrin]

Just a fire blanket for us in the van.

How many people have had a fire and used an extinguisher?

A few years ago I was in the Stellplatze in Ulm (D), we were having lunch.
Smoke rises from a Dutch camper.
At first I thought that the owner had switched on the Truma D, it is said that sometimes when switched on it does.

But the smoke continues, in short, something was on fire in the refrigerator.
A colleague and I rushed out with our fire extinguishers and were able to estinguish the fire.

I let you imagine if we hadn't been there, a destroyed camper and most likely a boom.

I still wince when I think of that, Jan.  I also marvel at your recovery and probably your spirit that drove it on.  [hand-clapping-smiley-emoticon]

I bought 2 fire stick extinguishers about a year ago. The 50 second versions, although they recommended the 100 second for a 7 metre Motorhome when I contacted them.
I have them installed by the door of the van. One at head level and one at foot level. This means laying hands on is easy from inside or out.

I bought because they have a 15 year shelf life and so probably cost no more than conventional extinguishers over that time scale. In the past I had to dispose of a Halon gas extinguisher as the gas became banned as a major greenhouse gas. The dry powder with which I replaced it probably ‘caked’ over the years despite me regularly shaking it. It made no sound when upended and I felt no movement of powder so my confidence was not high, particularly as it neared it’s expiry date.

Another factor albeit debatable is that a gas extinguisher will not leave the mess that a dry powder will. I did consider a water mist extinguisher as they seem to have a good reputation, but opted for the fire stick.

Another one to throw into the mix, the firetool, half the price but only discharges for 12 seconds and 5 yrs warranty....

Interesting, I read about firestick on some of the forums and was not aware of the firetool safety at the time. It would be interesting to see some sort of comparison test between the two.

I have looked at the firetool site and revisited the firestick website. The firestick certainly inspires more confidence as it is well detailed and instructive, whereas the firetool is a bit basic.

I must say I would also be swayed by discharge time. Most of the sellers here in N. Ireland are race and rally leaning motor factors, but when you read the news section there are good stories from motorhomers, rally drivers, F1 seem to use them and there is reference to space programme usage.

My local dealer https://raceandrally.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=fire+safety+stick&utm_source=website&utm_medium=Race+%26+Rally+&utm_campaign=where+to+buy

Are currently doing the 50 second version at £60 (normally £70).

Just ordered a 50 second one from these guys..

Fire Safety Stick - 50 Seconds – Vital Equipment

£76.78 inc vat & 2.99 p&p

Would have used Davy's link but you had to go too deep into the ordering process to find out how much the p&p was so I baled out.

Firestick arrived this morning, looks good apart from them only supplying one cheap plastic bracket which isn't enough imo if you want to mount it securely.
Had a look around and there are twin bracket holders available mainly from the racing/rally sector for around £18 - £20 which is too much money imo again.
So, had a look around and kitchen furniture plinth clips look like they will do the job, ordered 2 for £2.19 inc p&p, gotta be worth a punt, will let you know when they arrive..

Belt and braces eh? My two have stayed secure with the single clip since I fitted them, so about 10 to 15,000 miles across Ireland, France and Spain.

Perhaps they dont make the brackets as sturdy now but if you mount it vertically(which I am) it slips down the stick which is why hopefully the plinth clips will do the job.

Quick update...

Plinth clips were no good as they are on a sliding mount so used a couple of black plastic coated 32mm terry clips and they work a treat.

*Important update*

If anyone purchased one of these and isn't aware, there is an issue with the strikers which has just come to light. The main striker gets wet over time on some older variants and the top domed striker can sink, although firesafetystick have not contacted anyone direct (I bought mine from a separate company) the concern was raised on a.n.other forum.
Mine was affected and a quick email to Andrew at firesafetystick resulted in them promptly sending me an updated striker by return post.

All details in this (long) post on MHFun...

The fire safety stick seems expensive, but if it works in a fire, it will be worth it. I bought one, but, of course, have never used it.

The usual extinguisher in a car or motorhome is dry powder, and they're rubbish for putting vehicles. The vibration of driving settles the powder into a solid lump in just a few months - and then it won't work, but you won't know till it's too late.

set fire to it? 😂

which reminds me of when I was at Brunel uni doing my H&S diploma, we were taken out of the classroom onto some waste ground for a fire safety element. The fire was lit on a pile of waste, and as it was such a cold day we all huddled around it to keep warm 🤣🤣 to hell with putting it out!
