I have an Oyster 111 85cm auto skew system with twin lnb. I'm currently sat about 50 miles East of Carcassonne in S.France with good reception.

It would not pick up anything a few days ago in the Pyrenees, perhaps that's the new limit of the Astra2 footprint. Naturally it locks into Hotbird and Astra1 fine and am able to watch Italian or German stuff, no thanks!

That's the limit of my knowledge of where else it will work, but the best part is press a button and it opens, searches and locks onto the satellite itself, all automatic, no fuss unless you have a bloody great tree or mountain 20 feet in front of the dish. I panicked for a while thinking I'd somehow done something wrong, nothing wrong just perhaps I'd gone last the limit of its reception.

What version of Snipe do you have fitted?  Currently latest is Snipe 3.
If you have an earlier version, particularly, a Snipe 1 there can be problems with worn gearing in the dish.
Upgrading of these and changes to the controller, along with others, are what have changed in the later versions.
Might it be worthwhile investigating upgrading to a Snipe 3 as I think, but you'll need to confirm this, they use standard fitting plates \ wiring which should make installation much simpler.

We have a Snipe Dome but haven't tried it over the water yet.   Excellent in UK.
