Anyone going to watch the Tour de France apart from on TV  Smile  We are going tomorrow afternoon to North Stainley near Ripon so it will be late on Saturday afternoon when the cyclists pass on the way to Harrogate but will pass the time away with  BBQ and a few beers. Very Happy

It's TV for me, too far for a day trip and where will I park when we get there?  Many of the locals seem to think that it will be boom time for them, as reported here.  The authorities don't seem to have got the "park anywhere you can and enjoy the spectacle" attitude that prevails in France.  It puts me in mind of the rake it in, get rich quick, attitude that accompanied the the millennium celebrations.

I appreciate that there isn't the space in this country that you have in France and not all campsites/hotels etc. are ripping people off, but some effort to enter into the spirit of the thing would be appreciated.

I will try and be less grumpy in future!

Just come back form Yorkshire. Traveled most of the route. Love Yorkshire. Would not be there now for a big clock. Too many people and too many vehicles. As Nexxo said. TV for me.

TV viewing?

Recorded it to watch later. Started to watch and then they told me that to finish watching we had to change channels. Ah well! Didn't want to watch it anyway. But we did see some of the places we had just visited. Skipton looked good.

I note that Mark Cavendish has apologized for causing a crash. At least cycling appears to be getting a standard of sportsmanship it lacked for many years.

so you have 200 cyclists, in Yorkshire and SE England for 3 days, and they reckon they're all doing the 'TOUR DE FRANCE'

and there's no drugs in their sport?

Well we had a great time watching them fly past in a few seconds coming down the Woodhead Pass near Langsett just north of Sheffield.

A great friendly atmosphere and we're glad we made the effort as I doubt we will have another chance to see it. They passed us during an advert break of course! We were lucky with the weather - I've just watched stage 5 on the TV over cobbles in torrential rain of northern France - that looked lethal and unfortunately Froome crashed out.

Anyway we weren't ripped off although some were trying to cash in with day parking in a field for £10 and a weekend camp with entertainment and beer fest for £130.

We joined Sheffield DA of the Camping & Caravanning Club on a rally field half a mile off the course for only £8 a night.

Allez Allez as they shout

I forgot about this until just now, but last Sunday we went out towards the dales, and unfortunately the lycra race was on (tour de Yorkshire), what load of crap, so much lead up, so much publicity, so many people all lined up on the road, picnics all set up.

We stopped in Ilkley to get a coffee, we could have avoided it but decided as we were actually there we'd see what all the fuss was about, so I'm stood watching the crowds, a few bikes came through (posers) people started moaning about how long it was taking for anything to happen, no news of what was happening.

Then it started getting interesting, blue lights were seen, sirens heard I though oh okay here that come, but no, this was not the race of posers, but a race of Police marshals on BMWs, they'd charge in like nutters (but quite exciting, I once marshalled a HD rally) stop the traffic at a junction only to be replaced by a new nutter, this went on for about 20 minutes so they were well ahead of the field, then all the press came through, a tannoy car, (waste of time unless you were in the chuffing car) then  for all of 3 seconds we got to see the actual racers, then all the support cars, vans n trucks, what a utter waste of time effort and I assume money, what really pisses me off was I heard several say oh I need t get a push bike so more loonies on our roads, I did enjoy the police bike though, but wonder who paid for them, I hope not me.

Me anti bike, nah, what gives you that idea. just anti idiots who do not take responsibility for their own lives, and generally get in everyones way, and break the law with impunity, anyway do they not know my journey is more important than theirs [rolleyes]

Sounds fantastic. Not. The Nottingham stage of the Great British Cycle Race is routed right past my house. Great. Idiot parking everywhere and pillocks leaning push bikes on every vertical surface, fences, gates, walls even hedges. Seen it all before. Not a fan, Cyclists should take a road test and pay road tax. I could go on and on. But wont.

Oh please do John, I'm up to here with the inconsiderate aggressive oafs, you know the ones, they who just ride for exercise, never go through red lights, never mug people on the pavement, gob all over the place..

£32 million was spent on a cycle superhighway between Leeds and Bradford recently, it is largely in asian areas, who we know love to cycle :rolleyes) they effectively took a lane away from the rest of the traffic, not only that they removed the yellow lines so cars now park on the 1st of 3 lanes [rolleyes] and to cap it all because of the way certain sections of society live, it isn't safe to cycle on anyway as it's full of broken glass, pop cans, that's where cars don't park of course, you name it it's there, almost makes me feel sorry for cyclists, no not really, some arse, probably high up will have lobbied for this joke.
