For quite a long time after starting up and running the Speedo needle remains in the rest position. Then it starts to jump erratically between 0 and 120 mph!!!!!. After a while it settles itself down and then behaves. I originally thought it was the battery but I've just had a new one fitted and the problem remains the same. The clock also always starts from zero but I can live with that. Any ideas?

The vehicle is a '53 Swift Kontiki 660 on Fiat Ducato.

Might be the sender unit on the gearbox

Thanks. I'll get my friendly mechanic to have a look. Someone (not on MHO) said it might be the Hall Effect Sensor but I'd never heard of one of them. Google didn't make it a lot clearer.

They used to used the hall effect on the sparkrite ingnition systems to replace points on cars, just a disc and a magnetic sensor to position the spark at the right point, so no reason why it couldn't be used to detect rotational speed of the gearbox.

I'm surprised I managed to remember the name of the kit as I never actually used one, I thought they were overpriced to do a job I had already being diddled.

Sounds about right, this fit them to resto cars now, makes em a bit better to start on a morning I expect, all they need to do then is fit an injector kit which are out there nowadays for more popliar moduls, then disc brakes.

In Ameriky all things are possible.
