Having recently bought myself a new phone, I have passed my old Apple4s on to my wife. As she seldom uses a phone, only a few times a year, my question is what is the cheapest way to go .

Phone and text only, no need for data. I have trolled the web looking for a suitable card without success, any suggestions please.

I have 3 sims in a couple of old Apple 4s that I keep spare. They are payg and have just a tenner on each of them. Provided they are used to make a call regularly, every 3 months I think - but check! then they will not time out.

make a call to yourself and then hang up the payg phone without answering and the payg will not have used any money. Simples.

the sims are free from 3 you just add a bit of money to them.

I've been using 1pmobile for a while, they are very good for low phone users and you don't have to have any data if you don't want it. 1p per text and 1p per minute. £10 min top up every 120 days (effectively £2.50 a month) and any unused credit rolls over at the end of every 120 days.

They use the EE network so check their coverage is ok for you before you decide.

In fact, if you do decide to join them, use the following link and add my code and you will get an extra £5 added to your account when you activate it and I will too. [smile]

...and add the code J9554P

Vodafone still do a basic PAYG sim for low users. Giffgaff do a bundle for £6 per month, O2 bundle from £10 per month. Even 1pMobile at £10 top up every 120 days may be excessive cost if the phone is purely for emergencies. I wanted one for a tracker which would never use even £5 per month and the Vodafone is the only one I could find that still does a true PAYG system.

I use a giffgaff sim in my tracker (with credit but no bundle) - I think it's 5p per text.
