I am totally confused with the new roaming charges, on one hand they say there are none then on the other hand they say be careful as you could land with a large bill.   I read in a newspaper a couple of days ago about this but as many times as I read it I couldn't make out the difference.   When we are abroad and want to call the UK what happens? If we want to call abroad from UK what happens then?   Does anyone have a definitive answer? By the way we have one contract phone on O2 and a Paygo on Virgin.

MY contract with 3 has given me peace of mind for a couple of years now with no additional charges when phoning home. What to watch out for is calling a foreign mobile while abroad as those charges could hurt.

I have just had a long discussion with 3 about a huge internet charge made for when I was on the ferry back from Santander. The 'free' wifi they give you is definitely NOT free and you get lumbered with a maritime internet charge and it was huge.

Thankfully I will not be Paying a penny more than usual as I always refuse to be told I am at fault and will argue till we get my own way. (Miserable git is my middle name)

When Brexit comes into effect the EU will sting all UK nationals with massive roaming charges. In the van and on the phone.  [biggrin][biggrin][biggrin]

Our Daughter still lives in France but doesn't have a landline, just uses a French mobile, this is what I am really trying to find out what the cost will be, at the moment we use Skype whilst on WiFi but if we want to actually speak to her and other Friends on the phone it has been costly.   Think I will have to go into the O2 shop and ask them, they probably don't understand it either.

I think that the use of your phone, at home abroad, will be the same no matter where you are. However, if you exceed you allotted data allowance then charges incur. At present I have 500mb set at a maximum stop of 450mb. Soon to be 5gb and I will set the maximum at 4.5 gb, leaving some for emergencies.

Hope this helps

On the O2 contract I have unlimited calls and texts and 3GB data but use a 3 sim in the Ipad for Wifi.

From what I understand, it will still cost you the same as it always has to ring your daughter from the UK. - It is a 'roaming' charge, therefore designed for people who are not in their home country.. I assume the same will apply to your daughter if her 'home country' is France? it is essentially for people who are travelling abroad, not for people who live in one country and ring another.

There are also restrictions with the 'roaming.' - If one exceeds ones monthly allowance for calls/texts, when abroad, they will get charged for calls at the normal rate their providers charge for such calls. Switzerland and the Channel Islands are also not included by some 'phone companies. (Just thought I would include this for information for others Randonneur).

If you  had a pay monthly Vodafone account you could purchase an add on which would give you 100 mins of calls from UK to France for £3 a month, seems a good deal to me.

As I am now with Sky, there is an offer if you have tv. I am taking up the offer to have 1/2 price mobile costs. 5£ a month with 0.5gb, now gives 1gb and unlimited calls and texts, as the £10 package. Data unused is rolled over and added to the next month. When added can be kept for 3 years. So, 1gb added each month. I'm pleased. I do not use mobile data in the UK, so it will come in handy on the European trips.
