Do many of you on here tow trailers and use the ferry ?
I bought an Easy lifter Hydra Trail but could not get on with it, so sold it and bought a motolug, so my quandary is, my motorhome is 7.29 m long and the trailer 2.5
So when booking with DFDS the options are motorhome 7m + trailer 5m total 12m
Or motorhome 10m + trailer 5m , technically I should choose this option but am then paying for 15m total length when my actual total length is 9.8m
Do I chance the 7m + 5m trailer and hope they don't notice the MH is over 7m

It might be worth speaking to them, they can only put so many options on line or it gets dizzyingly complicated, They are more concerned with total length I would suspect, so look at what a 10mtr van would be and ring them and compare whatever price they give, and just hope you don't get the new boy/girl.

Sometimes they are not bothered but there is always the chance you will get a jobsworth who will come out with his tape measure, which I have heard happen.

Oh I wonder if they have some sort of infra red scanner as you drive in.

I asked one once, practice was the one word answer, but do they actually show the detail on whatever they use/refer to bring you aboard orisit a simple list or reg numbers and occupants.

Well I asked them yesterday via live chat
And so long as I declare motorhome and trailer and I'm within the overall length it's ok
So I can use motorhome 7m + trailer 5m or motorhome 10m + mini trailer 2m
I compared the cost to just motorhome 10m and the difference is minimal so happy days

Hi Gaffa
Can I ask how and why you couldn't get along with the Hydra Trail please as thinking of buying one?

Hi Ian

The Hydra Trail is a great design and it well made, if you have a lightish bike and a motorhome with not too much overhang then it will be fine.

My motorhome is over 7 meters and has 1 meter long chassis extensions which were replaced with the towbar extensions, so more than adequate for pulling in a straight line. but the nose weight is max 100 kilo, The problem i had is my bike an MT10 is 210 kilo and is very tall so when on the brakes the bike is tipping forwards and all the weight is rotating round the castor wheels and putting a lot of down force on the towball. In just one short journey it loosend the towbar side extension bolts. If I pushed the bike back and forth i could see the side extensions flexing. so I was not prepared to risk it, i can't imagine how much force would be applied if I had to brake hard from 60mph.

if you have pre 2012 MH with the towbar bolted directly onto the chassis it would probably be fine, but I had to have an approved tow bar and chassis extensions.
Happy to disucss further if you wish, if you send me a pm i'll give you my phone number
