I have my mobile phone with 1pmobile which i'm happy with but it has a fair use poicy for roaming abroad which states....

"You may only use our services in the EU/EEA/Zone1 destinations for periodic travel, like holidays or short breaks. If you’re not genuinely using our services for periodic travel we may have to charge you for, or suspend you from, using our services in the EU/EEA/Zone1. If you use our services in the EU/EEA/Zone1 for 60 or more days in any four-month period, this is likely to be deemed to be an unfair use of our services."

Not long back from a 6 week trip, the phone was switched on all the time but only used occasionally for the odd call and a small amount of browsing on the internet.

I'll probably ring them to ask but would they count that as 6 weeks use or would they just count the actual times I made a phonecall or connected to the internet as part of the 'fair use'?

Pete

I'd never heard of the company and I bet they all have different T&Cs to catch you out.

Neither had I. It was witzend who posted about them on here.

Its a good deal if you are a light phone user, suits me. Not particularly cheap for browsing though, you can get a 1gb data boost for £6 which lasts a month and was enough for me on the last trip.

I'm maybe thinking of getting a mifi thingie and a separate data sim for future trips.

If you get a mifi and data sim you will still be subject to a 60 limit. I use 3 for this service and find reasonably good coverage in Uk and France. Some report that you do not get 4g in France but only 3G. As someone who only browses forums and newspaper sites I find it perfectly ok. There is talk though that if you use a data sim abroad then you need to turn it on again on your return home to stop the count of days. 3 data sims used to need activated before leaving the Uk. Their website still states this but a couple of people have told me that they have been able to activate whilst abroad without penalty. Check amazon for the best 3 data sim deals.

Slightly tangential to your original post but still fairly relevant.

I bought a 3 simply last year, I popped it into my iPad4 and it's been really good, had a decent signal almost every time I used it.

That's interesting, is there anyway around this if you go away for say 3 months?

I've used my 3 mobile abroad for several years and never needed to worry about a limit. It's always switched on and receiving updates. Admittedly I've not been away more than 2 weeks at a time.

As I'm unable to tether my iPad to the iPhone when abroad I've just purchased a 1gb data sim from 3 to see how well it works, actually off eBay £7.99 and for one month only. All I did was put it in the slot and it works straight away. I'll see how much use I get out of it when I'm away from next weekend as I'll be able to see a total of usage.

I'd hope that the way you've been using it is exactly as they would expect it, it seems very fair use (ie negligible) to me.

Thanks Simon, I bought a 1gb data boost from 1pmobile (£6) on my last trip which lasts a month, I still had a bit left on the last day, I just used it to look and post on here occasionally and check the news and weather and a quick look at park4night when I wanted to see photo's of possible overnight spots. (you don't get photo's with p4n offline).

See full usage conditions here they say no extra charge for usage abroad

Yes, that is exactly what I purchased, although in 1gb/1month version. I'm only away for a week and so it will give me a good indication if a 12month one would help. I can tether to the phone in the U.K. With a 4gb a month limit. I've never exceeded that.

We are with Three… Historic reasons as they were the only network that allowed free roaming abroad.

Two phones and a MiFi data Sim only. We were away 8 months and nothing was switched off. So full use of our text and phone call allowances on our contracts. The MiFi hub is limited just to 12 GB per month, although we pay for 20 GB as this is considered fair usage.

No 60 days limit was applied as we were in Greece nearly 5 months.

Three does not allow tethering at all overseas.

We have been picking up 4G in the UK but there is no faster than 3G overseas.

Thanks for all your replies, I've just contacted 1pmobile.

The 60 day period does start the moment you switch your phone on abroad with their sim card in it and are connected to network but..

When I asked about going over that time limit, even with light use would I be penalised he said not. 1pmobile don't actually monitor this fair use policy but would only be a problem if the network you are using while abroad at that time complained to them about excess time or use, then they would probably look into it.

I think the gist I got was that as long as you don't take the mickey you should be ok.

Still think I might get a mifi as well and a data sim for internet use next time we go away for an extended trip.

You are lucky GiffGaff shut me off after 60 days even though I only used it in the first week.

Are you sure it is still working [wink] I had an email from them after 30 days warning me that I had to be back in the UK with it on within another 30 days or they would cut the service. I wasn't and they did. It was a PAYG sim. I returned to the UK about 6 weeks later turned on and it re-enabled automatically.

wouldn't tracker use be treated differently if they know about it?

Going back to my original query, on my recent trip I was approaching the limit of my fair use policy with 1pmobile, I know they said they didn't think it would be a problem but just to be on the safe side on this trip I switched my phone to airplane mode just before leaving UK, this cuts wifi as well so you have to switch that on again manually, I then used my mifi and 3 data sim via wifi while away with my phone, then turned airplane mode off on return to UK, checked my account and afaik they have no record of roaming on my phone roaming for the duration of the trip.
We only need a phone for emergencies so my wife left hers on during the trip (also 1pmobile) for emergency callls.

When we next go away we will swap which phone is logged on for calls and that should keep everyone happy.

Don't know if this is a good way to do things but i'm sure you will tell me if it isn't. [smile]

Since we went to France along with a 12gb data sim for the iPad - when I found that I could hotspot/tether abroad now, never used to be able to, and had a 4gb allowance - well now there is no allowance to be wary of. It appears that hotspot/tethering no less need has any limits on my 3 contract. I pay monthly so payg may well be different.

So, there we are, no need for a data sim when mine expires. 👍👍👍👍
