I think you will find the average Fiat van mechanic has no idea about alko chassis. They are completely different from the standard Fiat van set up
If western towing has told you need a complete axle why are you doubting them?

There are two kinds of Alko suspension, one where the end of the torsion bar is welded and these can not be mended so a replacement axel.

The other is an end plate that is bolted on that allows access to the flat torsion bars which can be replaced, these are on more recent vehicles, with yours being a quite old motorhome it probably will be the welded end type.

The cheapest option will probably be to fit air suspension on the rear axel, I resolved my broken suspension with air suspension quite successfully.

Hope that helps.

A trailer centre which works on horse box,s would know more about Alko axles used on a lot of trailers if your wheel is running out of line you,ll still need a new axle

I think the term "reassuringly expensive" might apply in this case! That axle leads a very stressful and unpleasant life underneath your motorhome. Far better that the job has been done to a high standard - and the repair bill will add to the value of your vehicle rather than detract from it. Happy touring!

Let's hope the repair does justice to the adage " pay cheap buy twice" and is a final fix.
