I know this is a very close subject to a few of you lately, but I came across this just now, it may upset some of you, it did me and it's decades since I lost my dog, but I feel it may help some so I'll post it here, and if you're up to it read it if not leave it alone.

There is a clue in the title of what it is about.

Sorry, Kev, I don't dare click on it, 'cos I'm an emotional old fool. Bad enough to lose a pet, without watching stuff about it.

What I read was stay with your pet until the end and that's what we did twice this year. I was not with one Sheltie out of our 6 others and one cat, but we buried him together. To be honest I can't believe anyone who loved their animal weather bird, cat, dog, horse or elephant could leave it in the hands of strangers for its last view of this world. Your with them until the end.

This is an emotional subject and we have had pets all our married life, so lots of them, but the one that upset me most was Daisy, our rescue goat. She was awful, butting everybody (except me) and obstinate, eating everything in the garden apart from what we wanted i.e the grass; she even ate the power supply to the garage but I had this strange affinity with her (unkinder folks might say we shared similar personalities[smile]) and the day we lost her was one of the worst of my life.

She developed bronchitis in her old age (or whatever the goat equivalent is) but we hung on until she got so weak she could barely stand or come out of her shed. The vet wanted me to take her to the surgery (I had a works van in those days so had popped her in the back on odd occasions to take her there) but I persuaded him to visit us and the dreadful thing was that she knew exactly what he had come for and summoned up enough strength from somewhere to fight us both while we tried to hold her down for the injection.

To cap it all this must have been in 1976 as the ground was so hard that Mrs S had to hose the hole whilst I was digging it and you need a big grave for a goat! (Since then we've always had small dogs!)

Well said, Milly, when I lost my Dusty, I had the vet and his nurse come to the house. I was holding her and her eyes were on me when she went. I sobbed my socks off.

Ellie gets stressed at the vet's too, so that would be the intention for her too, but we can never know what the future holds.

It was February this year and the ground had been frozen for weeks, we had the farmers tractor and digger to make Shades grave.
Manny cat was 11th of August so that was easily dug on top of her pal. Miss them both terribly.
